Papers, 1755-1839.

Papers of Paul Carrington include account books, 1755-1791, concerning his law practice Mecklenburg, Lunenburg, and other counties in southside Virginia, and expenses while attending the 1775 Virginia constitutional conventions and meetings of the Virginia Committee of Safety, and the 1788 Constitutional Convention of Virginia; and docket books, 1763-1774, with references to his lawsuits. Also included are letters, 1828-1839, to Mary Venable (Carrington) Grigsby about student life at Union Theological Seminary (then located in Hampden-Sydney, Va., and now in Richmond) and at Yale College (now University), slavery and abolitionists, the Nat Turner Insurrection, a Protestant Episcopal Church convention, the Virginia branch of the American Colonization Society (later known as the Colonization Society of Virginia), the 1832 cholera epidemic in Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Richmond, Va., and about a number of small private schools in Virginia.

Established November 4, 1823, as an auxiliary to the American Colonization Society, to provide and organize resources for the free black population of Virginia who desired to emigrate.
